The rich, dark timbre of the marimba in combination with the piano creates a unique acoustic opportunity for listeners, whether the music be reflective or toe-tapping. This afternoon concert will feature a variety of musical offerings from both classical and sacred literature, and points between.
Dennis Plies received his BA in Organ Performance from Biola University, BM and MM in Percussion from American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, and doctorate in Music Performance and Pedagogy from Western Colorado University. He taught at Warner Pacific University in Portland for 37 years. Courses included Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Aural Skills, Functional Keyboard Skills, Pedagogy, Percussion Techniques, and Humanities Colloquy: Faith, Living & Learning. He teaches piano in his home studio, offering a combination of classical music, jazz and improvisation. When he was 14 he auditioned and soloed on marimba with the San Gabriel Valley Symphony Orchestra, also with the Los Angeles Metropolitan Band. These experiences preceded his touring Europe and Japan with the marimba. Several recordings demonstrate his marimba and vibraphone musicianship in gospel, classical, and jazz idioms. Dennis and his wife Barbara have been married since 1964. They have four children and six grandchildren. Dennis enjoys hiking, traveling, and writing. His book published in 2014 is titled Embracing the Unforeseen with themes of faith, improvisation, and dialogue.
In February of 2019, the troupe heads to Florida for what is sure to be an outstanding performance.
